DrugTests

I just finished this cartoon for a new company in Sinton, Texas who offers drug testing services for businesses in the community. It just happens that one of their employees is my grandson, Ricky Heyser, so you can guess how much I got paid for all the hard work I did. How about Zero, Nada, Nothing ? But it was worth it since Ricky is my favorite grandson.

Copper Doors

It was my good fortune to have been born and raised in Bisbee, Arizona. This fairly small copper mining town, located in the Mule Mountains of southeastern Arizona on the Mexican border, was the ideal place to be raised during the 40′s and 50′s. Even today, 60 years later, there is a bond which unites all people who grew up in that town.
.
One of the interesting stories about Bisbee has to do with one of their schools, Lowell Elementary. This school was dedicated on August 3, 1931 and was heralded as one of the finest grade school buildings in Arizona at that time.  It was very modern in architecture and convenience with ornate art work adorning the outside of the building.
.
One of the more outstanding features at Lowell making it so unique and special, was the massive, double doors, constructed of 800 pounds of pure copper.   The doors were symbolic of the Bisbee mines and the ore that was the towns chief native product.  Because of safety issues the doors were removed in 2008 and remained in storage until 2010 when then principal, Lisa Holland decided that the doors needed to be re-hung.  She contacted the head of the Bisbee Alumni Association, Carol Loy (a formerly Internationally known model during her career days) about having the doors refurbished. Carol immediately went into action and began fundraising with “Copper Pennies For The Copper Doors” as the rallying cry.  Donations came in from all over the country and now the copper doors are once again in their proper place.  Restoration costs were $9300.  The main restoration work was done by two local artisans, George Green, coppersmith and Chris Flagler, master carpenter.
.
Carol had asked if I would draw a cartoon for the August 3,2011 program dedicating the rehanging of the doors —which I was more than happy to do. Wonderful strong memories of passing through, and admiring these doors has caused a high level of anticipation in the refinishing and re-hanging. They are an important part of not only the school, but Bisbee history as well. The school has been the site of plays, assemblies, town meetings, concerts, graduations and various other Bisbee events through its eight decades.

Booger Lee

I’m betting that the title of this Blog got your attention.  What in the world is a “Booger Lee”?

In some of my other Blog postings I mentioned that I had drawn cartoons for the Liberty Opry located in Liberty, Texas.  The Opry is located in an old movie theater in downtown Liberty and offers a program of live music almost every Saturday night of the year.  Each week there is a different theme as to the genre of the music presented.  One night might be primarily Country-Western while on other nights the plrogram will be centered around, Gospel, 50′s music, Rock and Roll, Country Legends, etc.

All of the music at the Opry is family-centered entertainment. If you are ever near Liberty, Texas I would encourage you to check out the Liberty Opry .   It will be an experience you wil never forget.

Booger Lee is a mainstay at the Opry and has a God-given gift to make people laugh.  He is the glue that holds the program together.  Booger had previously published a book titled “Booger Lee’s Comedy Cookbook”.  The book is currently being updated and I have been asked to draw illustrations for it.   I have drawn over 30 cartoons for the book which illustrate either some of the dishes he recommends or some of the stories he tells in the book ( called “Boogerisms”).

The cartoon below illustrates one of his Boogerisms and I will let your imagination run wild as to what the story might be.

My New Friend Hannah

Recently one of my Bisbee, Arizona friends (June Schaub) told me of a beautiful young girl named Hannah Zimmer who loves to draw cartoons. (I think Hannah’s mom, Tiffany, is a friend of June.)
.
June told Hannah that I also liked to draw cartoons so I sent Hannah a copy of the “How to Draw People Cartoons” book I had written.
.
Hannah just turned 8 years old in Janurary and since birth she has had many surgeries because of a medical problem she has. She lives in Painted Post, New York but is currently at Children’s Hospital at Cincinnati, Ohio where she is scheduled for another surgery on Feb 10, 2011.
.
I recently drew a cartoon of Hannah and much to my surprise, she has the cartoon posted on her Blog Homepage.

But if you do, please be very careful because I am very sure she will win your heart over too.

The Liberty Opry

I would not say that we live a dull life but I think the last movie my wife and I attended was the original Superman movie. There could have been one or more since then but you know how it is when old age creeps up on you ……. you develop CRS disease (Can’t Remember Stuff).
.
This past week, however, we did something somewhat more exciting than we usually do. We were visiting our niece and her husband in the Houston area and on Saturday night we went to the nearby town of LIberty, Texas and attended the Liberty Opry . The Opry is located in an old-time, small-town, movie theatre which was remodeled to feature live entertainment every Saturday night.  The show we attended was featured as “Gospel Music Night”. On other nights they feature other types of music. There program is professionaly done and is family oriented entertainment.
.
One of the interesting things about the show is that people with singing talent can audition to be one of the featured stars for one or more of the shows. Our niece Elaine Carlton was one of the stars for the show we attended and besides being one of the most beautiful gals in the world ( someone at her post office told her that was so) , she is also a “dang” good singer.

.
The cartoon I drew is of Jay Cantu, one of the owners of the  Liberty Opry and also one of the featured soloists each week.
.
Check out their webpage and if you’re ever near the town of Liberty, Texas get reservations for the show. Better yet, if you are a “wanna be” star then audition for the show.
